Our Humble Beginnings
In 1950, Russell D. Carter began a remarkable journey with just $300 and a vision, crafting Carter’s first kitchen in his Roanoke home’s basement. His tenacity led him to secure jobs by personally approaching homes under construction.
By 1953, Carter borrowed $8,000 to build the first business location at 2132 Shenandoah Valley Avenue, Roanoke. The company was incorporated, and while the family lived upstairs, the shop thrived in the basement. Despite a devastating fire in 1965, they persevered.
Expansions followed, adding shop space in 1972 and 1987. In 2007, they renovated the private residence, adding a 4,000 square foot showroom and office space.
In 2021, Duane C. Saufley purchased Carter’s Cabinet Shop and continues its legacy, crafting exceptional cabinetry for every room, honoring Russell Carter’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship.
